Version 3.66.0
You are getting some bug fixes in this release:
- Previously, any empty drafts (unpublished projects without objects or code) will be automatically deleted in Hopscotch. We have fixed it so that if you purchased custom art with seeds in an unpublished project, it will be kept in your drafts even if it’s empty.
- You may have noticed that when you duplicate an object with a name that ends with a number, the duplicated object will have the same name as the original object, making it confusing to distinguish the two. This is now fixed, and all the duplicates will have a number appended to the original object name.
If you have any questions/comments/feedback, please email us at help@gethopscotch.com.

Hey Hopscotchers,
You are getting a couple of bug fixes in this release! To start, you will notice that the app is much faster and smoother, especially when it comes to downloading projects and coding in Hopscotch. Yay!
Bug fixes in this version include:
- Hopscotch will no longer crash when you make a new custom rule or ability
- You can now update your custom art or image from the “Set Image” block
- Your text objects will no longer appear stretched when you resize them on stage
- When you delete a variable from the keyboard, it will be removed from your keyboard and your code
- Text values will update correctly in the block and on the text field above the keyboard
Thank you to all the users who helped report the bugs above!
We’d love to hear from you! If you have any questions/comments/feedback, please email us at help@gethopscotch.com. Happy Hopscotching!

Hey Hopscotchers!
Have you ever run into an unfamiliar block when you’re looking at someone else’s code? Now, you can long-press on ANY of the blocks in your editor to view its help doc. This will help you to understand anyone’s project on Hopscotch better. Plus, you’re getting a brand new look with the block help docs!
Also, make sure you check out the new Help menu (tap the gear button on the top-right corner of your screen and tap on “Help.“). Now you can file a bug report for Hopscotch with the “Report a Problem” button! Tap through the other menu options to discover more!
You may have noticed that sometimes the keyboard would get stuck on your screen even when you exit the project. This is now fixed! Thank you to everyone on the forum (and everyone who emailed us) for reporting this bug!

Hopscotchers, this is a big one: you can now use parameters in your custom rules and custom abilities! Now you can write the code once and use it all over your project with slight differences.
Open a new project and start playing with the refreshed starter rules to see parameters in action. The symmetrical mirror drawing and the two-colored gradient background are the Hopscotch team favorites so far. Lastly--open up the new rules to learn more about how they work. There are comments to explain what’s going on!
And as if that wasn’t enough: clones have gotten a total refresh! Instead of cloning an object in its original state, the clone will pick up the properties of that object at that moment. To learn more about clones, watch the brand new clone tutorial series in the video section of the app.
And lastly, for the advanced users, we’ve fixed some bugs in the execution order of code. Now you can use a set variable block right before an if statement, no problemo.
Other bug fixes:
The prompt block will work with local variables.
Comment blocks show more text.
Copying a rule or object now copies the set variable blocks too.
We love to hear from you! Send feedback to hello@gethopscotch.com.

Happy Holidays Hopscotchers!
Our gift to you: bug fixes!
- iOS 15 apps will no longer crash when scrolling a long list of methods. (Thank you 000 for the steps to reproduce it).
- When you add a rule in front of a set variable block it will go to the top of the list rather than the bottom.
- The visual glitch on iPhone when you have a top planter badge and a project that needs uploading is now gone.
Please and enjoy, and we'll see you in the new year!

And for those of you with advanced mode: now you can delete scenes! This was an oversight for too long.
Lastly, project files should now be a little bit smaller, we've improved the cleanup code, just for you!

Exciting news, Hopscotchers: you now have three brand new types of blocks to play with!
You can now make rules using “not” statements. Look for the “when not” block in the conditionals menu for the “when” blocks. You can also add “not” to a “check once if” and “check if else” blocks. If the statement is false, then your code will execute. For example, if you want to ensure your character object is flipped, use the “not” block to check if it’s not flipped, then add the “flip” block inside.
Speaking of “flipped,” there are new “flipped” blocks! Now, you can use “when flipped” in the conditionals menu for the “when” blocks to make rules for what an object should do when it is flipped. You can also add “flipped” to “check once if” and “check if else” blocks.
Finally, there’s now a block called “name” in the object variables menu. Use this block to get the name of your object without having to set a new variable. Sweet!
You’ll also notice that if you long press on an object in the stage, you’ll see a menu that will let you duplicate, rename, or delete it. Plus, if you resized your object before you duplicated it, the copy will be the same size. That way, you won’t have to resize it every time you copy it.
Bug fixes in this version include:
When you added a shape object, the shape would resize in play mode. This is fixed!
The help text for the new blocks was incorrect. Also fixed!
Long custom rule names will now wrap, instead of get cut off.
The “mirror” sample rule will now mirror all 4 clones, instead of just 3 of them.
We love to hear from you! Send feedback to hello@gethopscotch.com.

To get started, try searching the internet for some easy sheet music you can code into your game! Remember, if you need help, just press and hold the new blocks to see explainer text.
You will notice a whole bunch of new loading messages in this version. BIG shoutout to the Hopscotch community for supplying some hilarious jokes and interesting facts to entertain us while we wait for our projects to load!
Some of you reported problems with uploading large drafts. That should be fixed in this iteration--your biggest projects should now sync without a hitch.

Buckle up, Hopscotchers - there’s huge news to share.
With this update, every single one of our coding kits just became FREE.
Yep, you read that right. :)
Hopscotch’s mission is to expose every kid to the powerful ideas of computing through a programming tool that lets them make real software. And the best way for you to learn the core coding concepts you need to make amazing software is with Hopscotch’s coding kits.
These kits teach you everything from the basics to how to make your own versions of popular app store games like Pokemon Go and Rolling Sky. Until now, these kits have been subscriber-only.
That changes today.
Start with beginner kits like Make Plants Grow With Code. Then, learn how to make important game components with kits like Moving Backgrounds and Control Pad. Explore your artistic side with Pixel Art, or simulate the earth’s natural forces with Gravity. The sky is the limit!
You’ll also see an all-new coding course called ‘Learn From Kids’. This includes the very first kit made by a Hopscotch community member!
This version fixes a bug where the ‘message matches’ block was using the value of a text field if there was a ‘self’ string variable in your project, instead of what you’d entered in the block’s field. This is fixed now - phew!
Finally, if you’re Hopscotching with less-than-awesome internet connectivity, you should be able to start up the app faster.
Keep calm and Hopscotch on!
Please send feedback to hello@gethopscotch.com.

With this update, you don't need to long-press to copy or delete your drafts. Instead, you'll see a new button that lets you rename, copy or delete your works in progress.
Subscribers who use the beta editor will also see an option to clear any user variables you have in your project. This will make saved scores restart at 0, making it much easier to develop and debug your games. Yay!
Also, the copy link on the project cards is now much easier to access. Use this to share your project's web page with friends and family via text, email, or social media!
We love to hear from you! Please send feedback to hello@gethopscotch.com.

Get ready, Hopscotchers - major update coming your way!
Have you been wanting to add a new level or ability to your published game? Well, now you can publish updates to your games! The best part is you don’t need to un-publish them to do this - just tap to edit your project, make your changes, and then publish an update by either pressing ‘More’ or ‘Home’. Now, you can keep your games live as you make additions to them - just like an app in the app store!
Also, you may have noticed that the ‘Editing Project’ text would sometimes cover up your objects. That's been moved behind so this shouldn't happen anymore. Yay!

Newbies, rejoice! You’ll see an updated onboarding flow with this version to get you started with Hopscotch in no time. After creating your account, you’ll get to watch a brand new video that explains the ins and outs of how Hopscotch coding kits work. Woohoo!
You’ll also see some cool new channels in the Hopscotch community. First, there’s a “Top Gardens” leaderboard showing the Hopscotchers who have gotten the most plants in the past week. This is a great place to look for creators to follow! Second, there’s a “Most Planted” feed showing the projects that got the most plants over the past week. Try playing some of these popular games, and give a like or a plant to show your appreciation!
There’s some big news for subscribers who use the beta editor: we heard you loud and clear - and the much-requested ‘When Is Not Touching’ block has been added. Can’t wait to see what you make with it!
Also in this update are a number of bug fixes, including:
- Error message pops up when there’s a ‘When I Get a Message’ rule and the message variable doesn’t have a value
- The keyboard doesn’t pop up with the text prompt on mobile web
- User variables don’t remember values when you close and re-enter a game in webplayer v1.5.4
- Pressing ‘Done’ or the up/down arrows when you enter a value in a math block parameter will cause the text or symbol to show up as the value
- The ‘Time’ user variable shows up as a decimal instead of an integer

With this update, variables can be numbers, letters, symbols, or even emoji! What’s more, you can use the new “save input” and “set text to input” blocks to ask your game player to
enter text, and then use it in the game. Check out the Mad Libs kit to get a taste of what you can make!
Additionally, we've fixed a few small bugs:
- Bear is back! Now you can use the bear character as your avatar, ROARH.
- You can now rotate to landscape on the iPhone when you're playing a project, you'll have so much more space!
And, for those of you using the beta editor, there's some fabulous new updates for you to try as well.
First, you'll notice a new class of variables under the heading "User". These variables will save a user's data *between plays*. Combine that with the new time blocks and you can make your own Animal Crossing, Farmville, and more!
Second, for the artists out there, it just got a lot easier to draw animations. You can now duplicate and edit the custom art you've added to your project making it super simple to start animating.
Lastly, a highly requested feature is now in beta: you can finally delete variables. Try this out, and please let us know if you find any bugs!

In this release you'll see an updated design of the project card, with bigger buttons that make it easier to like and share projects. The time stamp that shows when the project was published is also back. Hurrah!
If you have a mushroom, check the 'Plants' section of your profile. You may notice your mushroom is a little "livelier" than it was before...
You will also notice that the channel names on the ‘Explore’ tab have been updated and reorganized a bit. There are also now descriptions explaining what kind of content you will find in each one!
Back by popular demand are the official Hopscotch character avatars. Now, you can customize your profile by adding one of them as your picture. Cool!
Finally, the notification for when you received a plant was getting cut off in portrait mode on some devices. This is now fixed.

Previously, if you had entered text in a value field, you had to manually switch to the letters keyboard to update it. Now, the app will automatically detect whether the field has numbers or letters when you tap it, and the appropriate keyboard will pop up for you. Cool!
Also, you will now find a link to the Hopscotch forum under the 'Settings' menu where you can discuss your coding ideas and get your coding questions answered by other Hopscotchers!
A whole bunch of bugs are also now fixed with this version.
For everyone:
- Your self icon in the keyboard wasn’t changing when you switched characters - no more. It’s fixed!
- Before, when you pressed 'add code' on Chillana, the 'rename' field would pop up instead. Now, you'll see the code editor pop up as expected.
- Video controls weren't working if you were using iOS 11. Now, you'll be able to stop, start, and mute your video if you're using this version!
For subscribers using the beta editor:
- If you reloaded a project that had a single 'save input' rule, you'd get prompted twice for text. Now, you'll only be asked once!
- If you played a project with a rule that prompted you for text a whole bunch of times, there was no way to exit it! Now, you'll get an option to stop the text prompts.
- If you entered a single quote in a 'set text to input' rule in an object, the object would stay the same instead of showing the quote and the text prompt wouldn't pop up. Fixed!
- The 'draw like a pen' custom rule wasn't working in the beta editor. Now, you can use this rule again so players can drag around an object to draw.
- If you used a 'save input' rule, players could enter text, but then if they restarted the game the text input wouldn't reset. Now it does. Yay!

Have you ever wanted to build a chatbot? Well, you're in luck - because now you can code with text strings in Hopscotch!
Subscribers with the beta editor turned ON can now use text as values in addition to numbers. Now, you'll be able to switch to the letters keyboard when working with variables and conditionals. You'll also see some brand new blocks:
- "Matches": takes 2 numbers or texts and treats them as strings, testing whether they match
- "(Self) Text": gets the text of your object
- "Save Input": will prompt the user for a text input, and then save it as a variable
- "Broadcast Message": will broadcast a message you define to the other objects in your game
- "When I Hear": will execute when the object "hears" a broadcasted message
You'll be able to build everything from a chatbot that can have conversations with your players to choose-your-own-adventure games!
Please note this feature is currently only available to subscribers with the beta editor turned ON.
Bug fixes in this release include:
- When you delete a variable using the “clear” or “X” buttons you’ll no longer see the word “clear” in your text field. (Cause that was pretty weird.)
- Stopped phantom images from reappearing after you’d already deleted them from your project.

In addition to using seeds to up your coding skills with video tutorials, you can use them to customize your Hopscotch projects with your own photos and drawings.
Add a custom object by tapping the “+” button on the code editor, then ‘Draw’ or ‘Photo’ in the ‘Custom’ objects menu. Once you trade 50 seeds for a custom art project, you can add unlimited art and pictures to it. You’ll also be able to trade seeds to remix community custom art projects!
Get seeds by tapping on your seed balance in your profile, or on the ‘Get seeds!’ button on the bottom bar.
Subscribers still have unlimited access to all content, as always!
In addition, two new blocks were added:
"Floor": gets the closest integer that is less than or equal to the number
"Ceiling": gets the closest integer that is greater than or equal to the number
The following bugs were also fixed in this version:
- New subscribers who closed the app or experienced loss of connectivity during signup were unable to create a Hopscotch account
- Guest accounts were unable to see the option to turn on the beta editor (a subscription is still required to enable this feature)
- When opening a draft with only 1 character, users had to tap several times to select the object
- When pressing the "back" or "clear" button, the text "back" or "clear" was displaying in the number parameter slot
- When opening a project with 3 or fewer objects, users weren't able to select or drag a grayed out object by tapping on its "add code" button

Hopscotchers, get excited for Hopscotch seeds. You can now trade seeds for tutorials and tools to up your coding skills!
- You can now buy select videos with seeds. You can find the number of seeds needed for each video next to the seed icon.
- Get seeds by tapping on your seed balance on your profile, or by tapping the ‘Get seeds!’ button on the bottom bar.
- Subscribers will continue to have unlimited access to all content. Subscriber-only videos have a seed icon with a “+” sign next to it.
- You’ll find a new coding course available in the video library with some of our favorite tutorials, now available for individual purchase with seeds.
A couple other highlights of this release are:
- Set Origin and Get Origin, which allow you to move objects from the bottom left corner rather than the center; and
- When you tap on a tab in the editor, it will scroll to the right spot and highlight where it thinks you want to go.
You may have noticed a bug in that was causing Notifications to be blank - this is now fixed, along with a bug that was causing lost code when you tapped a project twice. Also fixed is an issue that was causing text to be displayed in white (and thus hidden) in dark mode.
